My Approach
My work is grounded in evidence-based psychological approaches, particularly Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP). These approaches focus on developing psychological flexibility, increasing openness to thoughts, emotions and sensations, connecting with the present moment, and taking meaningful actions aligned with your personal values.
Climbing two mountains
To describe how I work, I often use the metaphor from Steven Hayes (developer of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) that explains this process like climbing two mountains: You are climbing your own mountain, at times steep, confusing, and painful. There are loose rocks, fog, and moments where you’re not sure which way to go. This mountain represents your life, your struggles, your thoughts, your emotions, your history.
I am also climbing a mountain nearby, my own mountain, dealing with my own challenges and experiences. From this position, I may have a different perspective, see things you can’t see from where you are, a path that curves around a cliff, a dead end you’re heading toward, a foothold just a bit to your left, etc.
As your psychologist I can offer suggestions, perspective, and guidance. I cannot climb your mountain for you, nor fully experience what your climb feels like. My role is not to direct you or pull you up, but to support you as you take steps in directions that matter to you.
